Herb Mania: Growing Italian Basil at home
It was only a few months ago that the husband and I decided to have an experiment with growing herbs in our little balcony space. Although there are a lot of herbs available in the market which you can just buy in a pot while growing them, we decided to opt for the store bought packed in plastic kind of herbs, to see if they can potentially survive after the refrigeration process.
Out of the many herbs we tried to regrow, Italian basil was the most successful and now we have a little bush growing up to 3 feet tall, towering all the other plants in our mini garden. We also managed to successfully regrow this basil with trimmed tops, letting the tops sit in water for about a few weeks and after the roots grow out, we pot them back in the soil for a mini basil plant.A perfect gift for friends and family who are as obsessed about herbs as you are.
To start with we plucked out the large leaves of the basil and put the stems in a clear glass jar filled with water. Let this rest on the windowsill with ample sunlight. Make sure to keep changing the water every alternate day so avoid the stems from rotting. After patiently repeating this process for 4 weeks, we finally saw the first roots sprouting out from the stems! Oh the joy! We let the stems root out for about two weeks after finally potting them in the soil. Make sure all the stems are spaced apart to let the individual plant grow without getting in the way of one another.
From mere 4 inch cuttings, the basil shot up to over 3 feet in a matter of a few weeks. Which is when we realized it needs to be trimmed and re potted regularly. This avoids the plant from getting droopy and it looks fresh. We are now greeted with a fresh sweet fragrance every time the wind rustles the leaves.
I also managed to come up with creative ways to use Pesto sauce, which you will know about later in other blog posts. Do stay tuned to know more!
